## Best eSIM for Diving Destinations in Asia — Komodo, Koh Tao and Beyond
[IMAGE:flat-design-scuba-diving-map-asia-komodo-koh-tao-flat-illustration]
As someone who did her Open Water certification in Koh Tao and has been back to Southeast Asia’s diving spots several times, I can tell you: connectivity and diving destinations have an inverse relationship. The best dive sites have the worst mobile data.
But you still need connectivity for booking, navigation, and emergencies. Here’s what to expect at each major diving destination.

### Koh Tao, Thailand — PADI Capital of the World
Koh Tao is the world’s busiest scuba certification destination. The island has improved significantly in connectivity over recent years but remains variable.
**Coverage:**
– Sairee Beach (main strip): Decent 4G, 15-25 Mbps
– Ban’s Diving (main pier area): Good signal
– Remote bungalows/beaches: 3G, 5-10 Mbps
– On dive boats: No signal once offshore
**Best eSIM for Koh Tao:** Airalo Thailand (True Move H performs better here than AIS on Koh Tao specifically)
### Koh Lanta, Thailand
Koh Lanta is less touristed than Samui or Phangan, with correspondingly variable connectivity.
**Coverage:**
– Old Town (Ban Sala Dan): Good 4G
– Long Beach/Klong Dao: Decent 3G-4G
– Remote south end: Poor
### Komodo National Park, Indonesia
Komodo is one of the world’s great dive destinations and has essentially no mobile coverage on the islands themselves.
**Coverage:**
– Labuan Bajo (departure town): Basic 4G, 3-8 Mbps
– Komodo/Rinca islands: No signal
– On liveaboard boats: No signal
**Strategy:** Download everything in Labuan Bajo. Consider a satellite messenger (Garmin inReach) for safety communication during extended liveaboard trips.
### Raja Ampat, Indonesia
The world’s best diving. Also the world’s most remote. Coverage essentially doesn’t exist on most of the islands.
**Coverage:**
– Sorong (gateway city): 4G
– Waisai (main Raja Ampat town): Very limited
– Remote diving areas: None

### Gili Islands + Lombok, Indonesia
**Gili Trawangan, Gili Air:** Basic 4G, 5-12 Mbps. Actually better than expected given no motorised vehicles.
**Lombok (Senggigi, Mataram):** Good 4G, 15-25 Mbps.
### My Recommendation for Diving Trips
**Airalo Asia Regional** is the best eSIM because:
– Covers Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines with one plan
– No need to switch between country plans as you move between dive destinations
**Minimum offline prep for any diving trip:**
1. Download maps for departure towns and accommodation areas
2. Save dive shop phone numbers
3. Download emergency procedures and nearest decompression chamber location
4. Brief someone at home on your itinerary
