## Best eSIM for Hanoi 2025 — Tested Over 2 Weeks

Hanoi is one of Southeast Asia’s most rewarding cities — and one where good connectivity genuinely matters for navigating its labyrinthine Old Quarter streets, booking day trips, and staying in touch while working remotely. I spent two weeks testing eSIM providers across the city. Here’s what I found.

### eSIM Coverage in Hanoi — The Basics

Hanoi has excellent 4G coverage. The major Vietnamese carriers (Viettel, Vinaphone, Mobifone) all provide solid urban coverage. Most eSIM providers roam on one of these networks.

**Airalo** roams primarily on Viettel — Vietnam’s largest carrier with best overall coverage.
**Holafly** uses Vinaphone or Viettel depending on plan.
**Nomad** roams on Viettel.

### Speed Tests — Hanoi Locations

| Location | Airalo | Holafly | Nomad |
|—|—|—|—|
| Old Quarter (Hoan Kiem) | 38 Mbps | 31 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| Tay Ho (West Lake) | 45 Mbps | 38 Mbps | 41 Mbps |
| Ba Dinh (government quarter) | 42 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 39 Mbps |
| Noi Bai Airport | 28 Mbps | 22 Mbps | 25 Mbps |
| Ha Long Bay day trip bus | 12 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 10 Mbps |

All providers work well in the city. Airalo edges ahead on consistency.

### Old Quarter Navigation — Why Fast Data Matters

Hanoi’s Old Quarter is a 36-street maze where each street historically sold one type of goods. Modern Google Maps helps, but streets are unmarked and confusing. Fast-loading maps saved me countless wrong turns.

With Airalo 4G, Maps loaded instantly even with screen brightness on maximum in sunlight. With Holafly (throttled after heavy use), there were occasional 3-5 second loading delays.

### Remote Work from Hanoi

Hanoi is an increasingly popular digital nomad base — cheaper than Saigon, great coffee culture, and a growing co-working scene.

**Co-working spaces tested:**
– Toong Co-working (Ba Dinh): 150 Mbps WiFi, reliable
– Circo (Tay Ho): 85 Mbps WiFi, excellent
– 5W Coffee + Work (Old Quarter): 40 Mbps WiFi, adequate

For work, co-working WiFi always outperforms eSIM. Use eSIM for commuting, exploring, and when café WiFi is slow.

### Day Trips from Hanoi — Does eSIM Work?

**Ha Long Bay (4-hour bus):** Patchy coverage through rural northern Vietnam. Expect gaps between towns. At the bay itself, boat WiFi is usually available.

**Ninh Binh (2-hour bus):** Coverage holds better along Highway 1. Reasonable 4G in Ninh Binh city, weaker at the karst landscapes.

**Sapa (overnight bus):** Coverage drops significantly in the mountains above 1,500m. Download offline maps before departure.

### My Hanoi eSIM Recommendation

For 1-4 weeks in Hanoi: **Airalo Vietnam 10GB (~$14)** — best price-to-coverage for a single-country stay.

For Hanoi + wider Vietnam trip: **Airalo Vietnam 20GB (~$22)** — covers Hanoi, Hoi An, Da Nang, HCMC on one plan.

For Hanoi + multi-country SEA: **Airalo Asia Regional 10GB (~$17)** — covers Vietnam plus all onward countries.
