TL;DR
✅ Airalo Japan eSIM — excellent speeds, NTT Docomo network, works everywhere including rural Tohoku
✅ Japan has arguably the best mobile infrastructure in Asia — even weak eSIM options perform reasonably
⚠️ Japan plans cost slightly more than SEA equivalents — budget accordingly for a Japan trip

Japan: Where Every eSIM Performs Well
After spending most of my time in Southeast Asia, my first month in Japan was a revelation for connectivity. Japan’s mobile infrastructure is genuinely world-class — NTT Docomo and SoftBank’s networks cover not just cities but mountain areas, remote islands, and even the Shinkansen train corridors with consistent 4G.
I spent three weeks in Japan across two visits: Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, and a week traveling through rural Tohoku (northeastern Japan). Here is the eSIM picture.
Speed Tests Across Japan
Tokyo (Shibuya, Shinjuku): Airalo (NTT Docomo) — 72 Mbps down / 28 Mbps up
The fastest speeds I recorded in Asia. Japan’s urban infrastructure is exceptional.
Tokyo (less central, Shimokitazawa area): 61 Mbps down / 22 Mbps up — still excellent.
Kyoto (Gion area): 58 Mbps down / 19 Mbps up — fast, no issues.
Osaka (Dotonbori): 65 Mbps down / 24 Mbps up — very strong.
Rural Tohoku (near Hiraizumi): 28 Mbps down / 9 Mbps up — impressive for a genuinely rural area.
Fuji Five Lakes (tourist area near Mt Fuji): 41 Mbps down / 14 Mbps up — solid.
Shinkansen (bullet train, Tokyo to Sendai): 15-35 Mbps, variable but generally usable. Japan Rail has worked hard to improve tunnel coverage.
Airalo Japan Plans
- 1GB / 7 days: $5
- 3GB / 30 days: $12
- 5GB / 30 days: $18
- 10GB / 30 days: $28
Japan plans are slightly more expensive than Southeast Asian equivalents, reflecting the higher wholesale data costs. For a 2-week Japan trip, the 3GB / 30-day plan at $12 is sufficient if you have hotel and café WiFi. For a month-long stay or heavy use, go for 5GB at $18.
Japan eSIM Notes
Internet is available almost everywhere. Japan has extensive free WiFi (convenience stores, train stations, tourist areas) — your mobile data is primarily for navigation and messaging between WiFi zones.
Rural Japan is not like rural SEA. Even remote mountain villages and rice field areas near Yamagata had 20-30 Mbps coverage. The infrastructure investment here is impressive.
Japan trip tip: Download the Japan Transit Planner app offline before arriving. Combined with Airalo’s data, navigating Japan’s complex train system becomes intuitive.
Pocket WiFi alternative: Japan popularised pocket WiFi rental for tourists. It is no longer competitive with Airalo’s pricing — an eSIM is simpler and cheaper. Skip the pocket WiFi desk at the airport.
Using Airalo’s Regional Asia Plan in Japan
The Airalo Asia regional plan covers Japan. If you’re doing a combined SEA and Japan trip, you can use your regional plan throughout — though you’ll likely burn through it faster in Japan given the high speeds and absence of throttling.
For a Japan-only trip or Japan as a primary destination, buy the Japan-specific plan for better speeds and cleaner pricing.
