Japan is one of my favourite countries in the world to visit — and fortunately, it’s also one of the easiest for eSIM travel. Japan has world-class mobile infrastructure, and most major eSIM providers offer Japan plans that work brilliantly.

I spent three weeks across Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, and a day trip to rural Yamanashi (Mt Fuji area). Here’s my 2025 eSIM guide.

### Quick Verdict

**Best overall:** Airalo Japan (IIJmio or NTT Docomo partnership)
**Best for heavy users:** Holafly Japan unlimited
**Convenience win:** Airalo Asia Regional (covers Japan + SEA)

### Japan’s Network Landscape

Japan’s top networks are NTT Docomo (largest), SoftBank, and au/KDDI. All three are excellent. Most eSIM providers use NTT Docomo or IIJmio (a Docomo MVNO), giving excellent coverage nationwide.

### Speed Test Results

| Location | Airalo (IIJmio) | Holafly |
|—|—|—|
| Tokyo (Shinjuku) | 75 Mbps ↓ | 65 Mbps ↓ |
| Kyoto (city centre) | 55 Mbps ↓ | 50 Mbps ↓ |
| Osaka (Dotonbori) | 68 Mbps ↓ | 58 Mbps ↓ |
| Rural Yamanashi | 25 Mbps ↓ | 20 Mbps ↓ |
| Bullet train (Shinkansen) | 15-40 Mbps ↓ | 10-35 Mbps ↓ |

Japan urban speeds are genuinely outstanding. 75 Mbps in Tokyo is excellent. Even rural areas were faster than urban Southeast Asia.

### What About the Shinkansen?

Bullet train connectivity is variable — it depends heavily on which section of track you’re on. Tunnels kill signal briefly. Open stretches between cities are good. Overall, it’s better than European train WiFi in my experience.

### Airalo Japan Pricing

– 3GB / 30 days: ~$9
– 10GB / 30 days: ~$18
– 20GB / 30 days: ~$28

**Asia Regional plan tip:** If you’re combining Japan with Southeast Asia, the Asia Regional plan covers both. No need for a separate Japan plan.

### Pocket WiFi vs eSIM in Japan

Japan was one of the last markets where pocket WiFi held on strongly — they’re even available at airport vending machines! In 2025, eSIM is still the better choice for solo travellers and couples. Pocket WiFi rental makes slightly more sense in Japan than elsewhere if you have a group of 3+ people, given Japan’s very reliable pocket WiFi rental market.

But for the typical Western traveller in 2025 with an eSIM-capable phone, Airalo is simpler and usually cheaper.

### My Recommendation

– **Japan-only trip:** Airalo Japan 10GB (~$18)
– **Japan + SEA trip:** Airalo Asia Regional 20GB (~$28)
– **Data-heavy Japan trip:** Holafly Japan unlimited (~$22 for 10 days)
