Best eSIM for Nepal 2025 — Trekking to Everest Base Camp

[IMAGE:flat-design-nepal-himalaya-map-kathmandu-everest-signal-flat]

Nepal is a destination where your mobile data expectations need calibrating. Kathmandu and Pokhara have decent 4G. The trekking routes are a very different story — and that’s actually fine, because half the reason you’re going is to disconnect.

I spent two weeks in Nepal: Kathmandu, Pokhara, and the start of the Annapurna Circuit before altitude got the better of me.

Nepal’s Networks

Ncell (private) and NTC/Nepal Telecom (state) are the main operators. Ncell has better urban coverage and data speeds; NTC has slightly broader rural and altitude coverage. Most eSIM providers use Ncell.

Coverage by Location

Location Airalo (Ncell) Notes
Kathmandu (Thamel) 25 Mbps ↓ Good 4G
Pokhara (lakeside) 20 Mbps ↓ Good 4G
Annapurna lower trail 3-8 Mbps ↓ 4G/3G variable
Higher altitude (3500m+) 1-5 Mbps ↓ 3G mostly
EBC route (reported) Minimal 3G near villages only

For Everest Base Camp trekkers: signal exists in some tea house villages along the route, particularly Namche Bazaar and Lukla, but becomes increasingly sparse and slow at altitude. For more information, check our guide on Best eSIM for iPhone 15 Asia 2025: Setup Guide, Compatible.

eSIM vs Local SIM in Nepal

For Nepal, I’d lean towards a local Ncell SIM for most visitors:

  • Available at Kathmandu airport
  • Very cheap (~NPR 500 / $4 for a tourist package)
  • Better signal negotiation for local network
  • Works just as well as an eSIM

The main reason to use an eSIM is if you’re combining Nepal with other Asian countries — the Airalo Asia Regional plan covers Nepal and avoids a separate SIM purchase.

For EBC Trekkers

For the Everest Base Camp trek:

  1. Download Maps.me offline for the full EBC route before leaving Kathmandu
  2. Download Gaia GPS topo maps
  3. Carry emergency communication options (satellite communicators like Garmin inReach are popular among trekkers)
  4. Save all accommodation contacts and emergency numbers offline
  5. Treat mobile data as occasional bonus, not primary communication

Airalo Nepal Pricing

  • 3GB / 30 days: ~$8
  • 10GB / 30 days: ~$15

My Recommendation

  • Kathmandu + Pokhara only: Either Airalo or local Ncell SIM, both work well
  • Nepal + broader Asia trip: Airalo Asia Regional
  • EBC/Annapurna trek: Local SIM + offline maps + satellite communicator for safety
