## Best eSIM for Southeast Asia Island Hopping 2025

Island hopping is one of Southeast Asia’s greatest pleasures — and one of the biggest connectivity challenges. Islands have less infrastructure than mainland cities, and some of the most beautiful ones have essentially no mobile coverage at all.

I’ve done island hopping in Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Here’s the honest guide for connected island hoppers.

### The Island Hopping Reality

Most islands fall into one of three categories:

**Category 1 — Well Connected**
– Koh Samui (Thailand)
– Boracay (Philippines)
– Langkawi (Malaysia)
– Penang (Malaysia)
→ Full 4G, equivalent to mainland cities

**Category 2 — Decent but Variable**
– Koh Phangan (Thailand)
– Koh Lanta (Thailand)
– Cebu (Philippines)
– Lombok (Indonesia)
→ 4G in towns, 3G/poor on remote beaches

**Category 3 — Limited/Offline**
– Koh Tao outer areas (Thailand)
– El Nido/Coron (Philippines)
– Nusa Penida (Indonesia)
– Gili Islands (Indonesia)
– Komodo Island (Indonesia)
→ Basic 3G at best, offline strategy essential

### Which eSIM is Best for Island Hopping?

**Airalo Asia Regional** remains my top pick. Here’s why:
– Covers Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia with one plan
– AIS (Thailand), Globe (Philippines), Telkomsel (Indonesia) are all reasonably strong
– No need to switch plans between island nations

**Nomad** is the runner-up specifically because it has slightly better fringe coverage — useful for Category 2 islands.

### The Offline Strategy (Non-Negotiable)

For any serious island hopping, your offline prep is as important as your eSIM choice:

1. **Download Google Maps offline** for each island before taking the boat
2. **Save accommodation details** — address, phone number, WhatsApp contact
3. **Download offline entertainment** — podcasts, books, Netflix downloads
4. **Screenshot your boat/ferry schedule** — don’t rely on live internet to find your transport
5. **Save emergency contacts** including your accommodation’s local number

### Connectivity on the Water

On ferry/speedboat crossings between islands, expect:
– First and last 15-20 minutes: reasonable signal (near port)
– Middle of crossing: often no signal
– Longer crossings (2+ hours): extended dead zones

For the Phuket to Koh Phi Phi crossing, or the Lombok to Gili fast boat — expect dead patches and enjoy the ocean instead.

### My Island Hopping eSIM Strategy

For a Thai islands route (Samui → Phangan → Tao → Lanta):
– **Airalo Asia Regional 10GB** covers the entire route
– Download each island’s maps before leaving the previous one
– Use hostel WiFi for any data-heavy tasks
– Mobile data for navigation and messaging only

For a Philippines islands route (Cebu → Siargao → Palawan):
– Same Airalo Asia Regional plan, Philippines covered
– Signal significantly more variable than Thai islands
– Offline prep is even more important
