eSIM 5G vs 4G in Asia — Is 5G Worth It in Southeast Asia?

[IMAGE:flat-design-5g-4g-comparison-chart-asia-flat-illustration]

Many newer eSIM plans advertise 5G capability. But in Southeast Asia, 5G rollout is uneven — and for most travellers, 4G LTE is entirely adequate. Here’s an honest look at 5G availability and whether you should care.

5G Availability in Southeast Asia — Country by Country

Country 5G Status Coverage Area
Singapore Extensive 5G Island-wide 5G coverage
Thailand Growing Bangkok, Chiang Mai, major cities
Vietnam Limited Hanoi, HCMC central areas
Indonesia Limited Jakarta, major cities
Malaysia Growing Kuala Lumpur, major cities
Philippines Limited Manila, Cebu central
Cambodia Minimal Some Phnom Penh coverage
Laos Not available 4G only
Myanmar Not available 4G only

Do eSIM Plans Support 5G?

Most major eSIM providers support 5G where available:

  • Airalo: 5G capable on supported devices where available
  • Holafly: 5G on select plans and regions
  • Nomad: 5G where network supports it

You need both a 5G-capable device AND to be in a 5G coverage area for 5G to activate.

Real-World 5G Speed Tests — Bangkok

5G zones tested (Sukhumvit, Siam area):

Provider Connection Download Upload
Airalo on AIS 5G 5G NR 285 Mbps 95 Mbps
Airalo on AIS LTE 4G LTE 55 Mbps 28 Mbps

5G is dramatically faster — but only in Bangkok’s limited 5G coverage zones.

Singapore — The 5G Showcase

Singapore is the only Southeast Asian country with near-complete 5G coverage. Testing with Airalo on a Singtel-roaming connection:

  • 5G download: 450-680 Mbps
  • 5G upload: 85-120 Mbps
  • Latency: 8-12ms

This is exceptional. Singapore’s 5G is genuinely transformative for data performance. For remote workers passing through Singapore, this means seamless 4K video calls and instant large file transfers.

Does 5G Matter for Most Travellers?

For typical travel use (navigation, messaging, social media, standard video calls):

4G LTE delivers: 30-60 Mbps — more than enough
5G delivers: 150-600 Mbps — massive overkill for these use cases

You won’t notice a difference between 4G and 5G when checking Google Maps or sending WhatsApp messages. 5G makes a difference for:

  • Large file uploads (photographers, video creators)
  • 4K video streaming
  • Cloud backup of large photo/video libraries
  • Low-latency gaming

Practical Recommendation

Don’t pay a premium specifically for 5G when travelling Southeast Asia — coverage is too limited outside Singapore and Bangkok for 5G to be a reliable feature.

If your plan includes 5G: Great, use it when available. Your phone will automatically connect to 5G where available and fall back to 4G elsewhere.

If choosing between 5G plan ($25) and 4G plan ($17): For Thailand + Vietnam + Cambodia travel, the 5G premium is rarely worth it. 4G covers 95%+ of time outside Singapore.

Singapore exception: If Singapore is a significant stop, 5G capability adds genuine value. Singapore’s near-complete 5G coverage makes it useful there.
