eSIM for Brunei: Small Country, Big Connectivity Questions Answered
Brunei is one of the smallest and most undervisited countries in Southeast Asia — and therefore one of the least-covered destinations in eSIM guides. But it’s a genuinely interesting stop on a Borneo itinerary, and the eSIM for Brunei situation is surprisingly positive. I tested it during a 3-day visit as part of a Borneo trip covering Sabah and Sarawak. Here’s what I found.
Brunei’s Mobile Network
Brunei has two main mobile operators: DST (Data Stream Technology) and Progresif. DST is the dominant network with the best 4G LTE coverage across the country. Progresif launched 5G services in parts of Bandar Seri Begawan in recent years and offers competitive data pricing for local users. Most international eSIM providers route through DST for Brunei.
For a country the size of a small Scottish county, Brunei actually has excellent mobile infrastructure — the oil wealth has funded modern telecommunications. Coverage across Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) and major roads is comprehensive.

Airalo Brunei eSIM
Airalo lists Brunei eSIM plans routing through DST. Plans are modestly priced given Brunei’s small geographic footprint — 1–2GB is typically sufficient for a short visit. I used Airalo’s 1GB plan during my 3-day stay and used less than 700MB, which tells you something about the data demands of a Brunei trip.
- Network: DST Communications
- Speeds in BSB: 25–42 Mbps download in city center
- Hotspot: Yes
- Validity: 7–30 day options
Airalo Regional Plans
If visiting Brunei as part of a Borneo trip that includes Kota Kinabalu (Sabah) and Kuching (Sarawak), a Malaysia-focused eSIM or Airalo’s regional Asia plan may be more economical than a Brunei-specific eSIM. Malaysia’s network covers most of Sarawak and Sabah, and Brunei is a brief detour in most Borneo itineraries.
Holafly Brunei
Holafly covers Brunei but the unlimited plan is overkill for a 2–3 day visit. Unless you’re doing extended remote work from BSB (unusual but possible), a data-capped plan is more economical.
Coverage by Area
Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB)
Excellent 4G coverage throughout the capital. The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque area, Kampong Ayer (the famous water village), Gadong commercial area, and the waterfront all have strong LTE. I was getting 28–42 Mbps — some of the fastest eSIM speeds I measured in Southeast Asia, actually. Not surprising given the infrastructure investment and low population density.
Seria & Kuala Belait
Good coverage in the oil industry towns in Brunei’s western Belait district. If you’re travelling the coastal road between BSB and the Malaysian border at Miri, connectivity is functional throughout.
Ulu Temburong National Park
This is the one connectivity challenge in Brunei. Ulu Temburong is Brunei’s pristine rainforest national park, accessible only by longboat through the Temburong River. The park itself has very limited to no mobile coverage — this is expected and appropriate for a protected rainforest. Coverage exists in Bangar town (the main town in Temburong district) but disappears in the forest.
For Temburong day trips or overnight stays: download maps and park information before you go. The connectivity gap is minimal against the extraordinary jungle canopy walkway experience.
Practical Brunei Travel Notes
- Brunei is alcohol-free — not a connectivity note, but practically relevant. Your eSIM Google searches for "BSB restaurants" will reflect this reality
- Cashless payments are common in BSB — having mobile data to use banking apps is practical
- The Empire Hotel (if you’re visiting on a luxury Borneo trip) has its own WiFi infrastructure but eSIM coverage outside is strong
- Brunei entry requirements: Most nationalities get visa-free entry. Check online before arrival — your eSIM-enabled research from the previous country makes this easy
Brunei eSIM vs Local SIM
DST SIM cards are available in BSB for around BND 8–15 (~$6–11) with data included. Given the typical 2–3 day Brunei visit, an eSIM is more practical than finding a DST store and going through local SIM registration (which requires passport presentation). For extended stays in Brunei (rare), a local SIM offers better value.
The reality: most travellers visit Brunei as part of a Borneo itinerary. An eSIM covering Malaysia/Borneo with Brunei add-on, or Airalo’s regional Asia plan, handles the connectivity without any local purchasing hassle.
Combining Brunei with a Borneo Trip
The practical Borneo eSIM strategy: use a Malaysia-focused eSIM for Kota Kinabalu and Kuching portions, add a Brunei eSIM for the BSB stopover, or use Airalo’s regional Asia plan to cover all three seamlessly. Check our Borneo eSIM guide for the full connectivity picture across Malaysian Borneo. And for the broader Southeast Asia context, our Southeast Asia eSIM overview covers regional planning.
My Verdict
Brunei punches above its weight for connectivity — the infrastructure is excellent and eSIMs work well here. Airalo’s smallest Brunei plan (1GB, 7 days) is sufficient for the typical short visit. Connectivity won’t be your challenge in Brunei — the bigger questions are navigating the cultural norms, marvelling at the mosque architecture, and deciding how long to spend drifting through Kampong Ayer by water taxi.
Brunei’s Water Village: Navigating Kampong Ayer with eSIM
Kampong Ayer, the world’s largest water village with approximately 30,000 residents living in stilt houses over the Brunei River, is the most distinctive sight in BSB. Navigating the maze of wooden boardwalks connecting the village clusters is genuinely confusing without a map. Your eSIM-enabled Google Maps is essential here — the water village is mapped in reasonable detail and helps you navigate between the different community clusters and find the water taxis back to the main waterfront.
Photography in Kampong Ayer is spectacular — golden hour light on the wooden houses, mosque reflections in the water, local life along the boardwalks. Your eSIM data lets you check sunset time, navigate to the best viewpoints, and upload immediately while the light is still good. The water village has strong 4G throughout, which given its location over water is actually somewhat remarkable and speaks to Brunei’s infrastructure investment.
Brunei Day Trip Planning with eSIM: Maximising a Short Visit
Most visitors have 2-3 days in Brunei as part of a wider Borneo or Southeast Asia trip. Here’s how to make the most of limited time with eSIM connectivity supporting efficient logistics:
Day 1 — BSB exploration: Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque (morning light, arrive by 8am for empty forecourt), Royal Regalia Museum (free, incredible collection), Kampong Ayer water taxi tour, waterfront evening. Your eSIM handles navigation between these spread-out attractions and lets you check opening hours before heading to each location.
Day 2 — Temburong day trip: Depart early on the express boat to Bangar (1.5 hours), arrange transport to Ulu Temburong park, canopy walkway, return to BSB. Download Temburong offline maps before leaving BSB as coverage disappears in the forest. The express boat journey through mangrove channels to Temburong is partly covered by Dhiraagu signal.
Day 3 — Seria oil town and Malaysia border: Visit the oil exhibition at Seria, cross into Malaysian Sarawak at Miri for onward travel. Your eSIM transitions between Brunei and Malaysian coverage as you cross the border — if using an Airalo regional Asia plan, this is seamless.
The eSIM’s value in Brunei is primarily navigational — finding the less-obvious attractions, coordinating boat transfers, and managing the logistics of a tight 2-3 day itinerary efficiently.
