Running low on eSIM data mid-trip is manageable — if you know what to do. Airalo makes top-up straightforward. Here’s the complete guide to adding data without connectivity gaps.

Two Ways to Get More Data on Airalo

Method 1: Purchase an Additional Plan
Buy a new plan for the same country/region. The new plan activates and your data resets. Old plan (if still active) runs in parallel until you switch.

Method 2: Purchase a Top-Up (Where Available)
Some plans support direct data add-ons (additional GB to existing plan). Not available on all plans — check in the app.

Method 1 — Buy a New Plan (Most Common)

Step 1: Open Airalo app
Step 2: Browse plans → select your current country or Asia Regional
Step 3: Purchase a new plan
Step 4: QR code provided — but you’re already installed
Step 5: Activate in Settings → Cellular → install new plan OR

Easier: Go to Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan → enter new plan’s activation code manually (from Airalo app)

The new plan activates. Your phone switches to it as the data source.

Method 2 — Direct Top-Up

Where available (select plans):

  1. Open Airalo app
  2. Go to My eSIMs → select active eSIM
  3. Look for “Top Up” or “Add Data” option
  4. Purchase additional GB
  5. Added to existing plan balance immediately

This is faster — no new QR code install needed.

What to Do If Your Plan Expires

If your plan’s time period ends (not just data, but the 30-day validity):

  1. Open Airalo on any WiFi (café, hotel)
  2. Purchase a new plan
  3. Install via Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan

Time gap between expiry and new plan activation: typically 5-15 minutes.

To avoid this: Set a calendar reminder 3 days before plan expiry. Or enable Airalo app notifications for low data/expiry warnings.

Setting Up Data Alerts

iPhone data usage alerts:
Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Usage → enable Usage Warning

This shows daily/weekly usage. No automatic eSIM notification — you need to monitor manually.

Airalo app: Shows your remaining data balance. Check periodically.

My rule: When I hit 30% remaining, I purchase my next plan in advance. It sits installed but not activated until I need it.

What If You Have No Data and Need to Top Up?

To purchase a new Airalo plan, you need an internet connection. Options:

  1. Hotel WiFi: Ask at reception
  2. Café WiFi: Most cafés in tourist areas have WiFi
  3. Ask to borrow someone’s phone: For the purchase only
  4. Purchase in advance: Best solution — always have next plan ready

Lesson: Never let your data run to zero without a backup plan purchased.

Pro Strategy — Pre-Purchase Before Departure

For long multi-country trips:

  1. Purchase and install Airalo Asia Regional for your current location
  2. Also purchase (but don’t activate) a second plan for your next country
  3. When you cross the border, activate the waiting plan

Zero gap, no WiFi hunting needed.
