## eSIM Troubleshooting: What to Do When Your eSIM Doesn’t Work

I’ve been there. Landing in a new country, eSIM showing ‘No Service’, airport WiFi too weak to load the Airalo app. It’s one of the few genuinely stressful moments in digital nomad life.

Here’s the complete fix guide, organised by most-likely-to-least-likely cause.

### Fix #1: Enable Data Roaming (This Is the Cause 70% of the Time)

Seriously. This is the most common reason eSIMs don’t connect after installation.

**iPhone:**
Settings > Mobile Data > [Your eSIM line] > Data Roaming: ON

**Samsung:**
Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Data Roaming: ON

**Google Pixel:**
Settings > Network & Internet > [Your eSIM] > Roaming: ON

After enabling, toggle Airplane Mode on and off. Wait 60 seconds.

### Fix #2: Make Sure the Right SIM Is Selected for Data

If you have a dual SIM phone, check which line is set as your mobile data source.

**iPhone:** Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data: [select your Airalo eSIM]
**Android:** Settings > SIM card manager > Mobile data: [select Airalo eSIM]

### Fix #3: Toggle Airplane Mode

Simple but effective. Turn Airplane Mode ON, wait 10 seconds, turn OFF. This forces your phone to search for available networks and re-register.

### Fix #4: Restart Your Phone

A full restart clears cached network settings and often resolves connection issues.

### Fix #5: Check Your Plan Is Active

Some Airalo plans activate from the moment of purchase; others activate from first use. Check in the Airalo app:
1. Go to My eSIMs
2. Check the plan status — if it says “Not Started” or similar, that’s why
3. Some plans require you to toggle data on to activate them

### Fix #6: Manual Network Selection

If your phone can’t auto-connect, try manual network selection:

**iPhone:** Settings > Mobile Data > [Airalo eSIM] > Network Selection > Manual > search for available networks

**Android:** Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Network operators > Search manually

Select a network and wait for it to connect. If one fails, try another.

### Fix #7: Check Your Plan Coverage

Make sure the country you’re in is covered by your plan. Check in the Airalo app under your plan details. If you bought a Thailand plan and you’re in Cambodia, it won’t work.

### Fix #8: Check Your Plan Hasn’t Expired

Plans expire on their end date, not just when data runs out. A plan purchased a month ago may have already expired even if you didn’t use all the data.

### Fix #9: Contact Airalo Support

If none of the above works:
1. Open the Airalo app
2. Go to Help / Support
3. Start an in-app chat
4. Provide: your eSIM ICCID number, the country you’re in, what error message appears
5. Response time: 2-12 hours typically

Whilst waiting, ask your hotel or hostel for WiFi, or find a café.

### Emergency Backup Plan

If your eSIM fails completely in an emergency:
1. Connect to any available WiFi (hotel, café, airport)
2. Use WhatsApp/Telegram to contact anyone you need
3. Purchase a new eSIM through the Airalo app on WiFi
4. Or purchase a local physical SIM
