Testing Methodology

  • Tests run on an iPhone 15 Pro (5G capable)
  • Used Speedtest.net by Ookla
  • Tests run at different times of day (9am, 2pm, 8pm)
  • Same locations for all providers where possible
  • Results = average of 3 tests per provider per location

Bangkok Speed Tests

Provider Network Used Download (avg) Upload (avg) Latency
Airalo AIS 4G 52 Mbps 28 Mbps 18ms
Holafly True Move H 44 Mbps 24 Mbps 22ms
Nomad AIS 4G 48 Mbps 25 Mbps 19ms
GigSky AIS 4G 50 Mbps 27 Mbps 18ms
Local AIS SIM AIS 4G 58 Mbps 32 Mbps 15ms
Local True SIM True Move H 51 Mbps 29 Mbps 17ms

Bangkok verdict: All providers excellent. Local SIMs slightly faster than roaming eSIMs — possibly due to higher network priority for native subscribers. For more information, check our guide on Best eSIM Cards for Southeast Asia Travel (Airalo, Holafly,.

Chiang Mai Speed Tests

Provider Download (avg) Upload (avg) Latency
Airalo 38 Mbps 18 Mbps 22ms
Holafly 31 Mbps 15 Mbps 28ms
Nomad 35 Mbps 17 Mbps 24ms
Local AIS SIM 45 Mbps 22 Mbps 18ms

Koh Samui Speed Tests

Holafly 22 Mbps 9 Mbps
Nomad 24 Mbps 10 Mbps
Local AIS SIM 32 Mbps 14 Mbps

Key Findings

  1. AIS-backed plans consistently outperform True Move H across all locations tested
  2. Local SIMs are 10-30% faster than equivalent eSIM roaming plans — likely due to native subscriber priority
  3. Rural performance advantage of AIS is significant — Holafly (True) is noticeably slower in Mae Hong Son
  4. Bangkok differences are minimal — any provider works excellently in urban Bangkok
  5. Latency is good across all providers — under 25ms for all in Bangkok

What This Means for You

  • For Bangkok and cities: Any provider is fine, differences are minimal
  • For rural northern Thailand: Choose AIS-backed plans (Airalo, Nomad, GigSky)
  • For maximum speed: Local AIS SIM outperforms all eSIM providers
  • For convenience + speed balance: Airalo (AIS) is the winner
