## TL;DR

✅ eSIM installation takes 4-6 minutes and requires WiFi — do it before you board the plane
✅ Works on iPhone XS and later, Samsung Galaxy S20+, Pixel 3+ and most 2021+ flagship Android devices
⚠️ You cannot install an eSIM without internet — the most common mistake people make

## Why I’m Writing This Guide

I watched a man nearly cry at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport last April. He’d bought an Airalo eSIM, he was very proud of himself for planning ahead, and he was standing in arrivals desperately trying to install it with no internet connection. He had not read the one critical instruction: you need WiFi to install.

I helped him find the airport free WiFi, walked him through the install in about 6 minutes, and watched him visibly relax as his Grab app loaded. But he spent 25 minutes stressing unnecessarily.

This guide exists so that does not happen to you.

## Before You Start: Check Your Device

Not all phones support eSIM. You need to confirm two things:

**1. eSIM hardware compatibility:**
– iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and later — yes
– iPhone 14 and later (US models) — eSIM only, no physical SIM slot
– Samsung Galaxy S20 and later — yes
– Google Pixel 3 and later — yes
– Most 2021+ flagship Android devices — yes
– Older phones, budget Android devices — check manufacturer specs

**2. Carrier unlock:**
Your phone must be unlocked from your home carrier. If you bought your phone on a contract, it may be locked to your carrier for 12-24 months. Check Settings > General > About on iPhone — if it says “No SIM restrictions” you are good. On Android, check Settings > Network > Carrier.

Airalo has a device compatibility checker at their website — use it if you’re uncertain.

## How to Install an eSIM on iPhone

### Step 1: Buy the eSIM Plan
Download the Airalo app, create an account, select your destination country and plan. Complete purchase. You will see an installation screen with a QR code or a “Direct Install” button.

### Step 2: Start the Installation (requires WiFi)
On iPhone: Go to **Settings > Mobile Service > Add eSIM**

Alternatively, tap “Direct Install” in the Airalo app — this takes you directly to the eSIM activation flow without needing a QR code scan.

### Step 3: Follow the Setup Wizard
Your iPhone will walk you through:
– Confirming you want to add a new plan
– Labelling the new line (“Thailand” or “Airalo” — name it something recognisable)
– Choosing which line handles calls/SMS vs data

### Step 4: Set Data Roaming
Go to **Settings > Mobile Service > [Your Airalo eSIM label] > Data Roaming** and make sure it is **ON**. This is the step people miss. Without data roaming enabled on the eSIM, it will not use data even when active.

### Step 5: Set as Default for Data
**Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data > [Your Airalo eSIM]**

Switch active eSIMs the same way when you arrive in a new country.

## How to Install an eSIM on Android (Samsung / Pixel)

### Samsung Galaxy
1. Go to **Settings > Connections > SIM card manager > Add mobile plan**
2. Scan the QR code from the Airalo app OR tap the link from your purchase confirmation email
3. Confirm the plan details
4. Label the eSIM and set it as your mobile data source
5. Enable data roaming: **Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Data Roaming > ON**

### Google Pixel
1. Go to **Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Add SIM**
2. Scan QR code or use the Direct Install link
3. Follow activation steps
4. Set as data SIM and enable roaming

## Troubleshooting: The 5 Most Common Issues

**Issue 1: “eSIM installed but shows No Service”**
Solution: Toggle airplane mode off and on. Go to Settings > Mobile Service > [eSIM] > Network Selection > Manual, wait for the network list to appear, select the correct carrier (AIS for Thailand, Viettel for Vietnam, Telkomsel for Indonesia), then switch back to automatic.

**Issue 2: “eSIM won’t install — keeps failing at the same step”**
Solution: Make sure your WiFi connection is stable. Public WiFi (airports, cafés) can fail mid-install. Use your hotel WiFi or personal hotspot from another device. If still failing, restart your phone and try again.

**Issue 3: “Data not working even though eSIM shows active”**
Solution: Confirm Data Roaming is ON for the eSIM (the most common missed step). Also check that the Airalo eSIM is set as your Mobile Data source, not your home SIM.

**Issue 4: “I accidentally deleted the eSIM”**
Solution: Contact Airalo support with your order number — they can often reissue the eSIM profile. Note: eSIMs are designed to be non-transferable and some plans can only be installed once, so be careful.

**Issue 5: “QR code won’t scan”**
Solution: Use the Direct Install link option instead — the Airalo app offers this as an alternative. Or screenshot the QR code on another device and scan it.

## Pro Tips From the Field

**Install at home, activate on arrival.** The eSIM profile is stored on your device once installed. It does not activate and use data until you are in the destination country. Install it on your home WiFi before you travel, with zero stress.

**Name your eSIMs clearly.** I label mine “TH Airalo,” “VN Airalo,” “ID Airalo” etc. Makes switching between profiles quick and obvious at borders.

**Keep the Airalo app installed.** You need it to check data balance, buy top-ups, and access support. It does not need to be running in the background to use the eSIM.

**Battery saver mode can affect eSIM.** Some phones reduce eSIM radio activity in extreme battery saver mode. If your eSIM suddenly loses signal when your battery is low, this may be why.
