How to Set Up an eSIM Before Traveling to Asia — Complete Guide

One of the biggest advantages of eSIM over physical SIM is that you can sort everything out before you leave home. No airport queues. No scrambling for WiFi when you land. Just land, turn off Airplane Mode, and you’re connected.
Here’s exactly how to set it up.

Step 1: Check Your Phone Supports eSIM
Before doing anything else:
iPhone: Settings > General > About — look for “Available SIM” or check for a “Add eSIM” option in Settings > Mobile Data
Android: Settings > Connections > SIM card manager — if you see an “Add eSIM” option, you’re set
If neither exists, your phone may not support eSIM. Check your model’s specifications online.
Step 2: Check Your Phone Is Carrier-Unlocked
Some phones purchased through carriers are locked to that carrier and can’t install third-party eSIMs.
To check on iPhone: Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. Should say “No SIM restrictions.”
To check on Android: The process varies, but if you can install eSIMs from your network provider, your phone is likely unlocked. Otherwise, contact your carrier.
Step 3: Choose Your Plan
For a Southeast Asia trip, I recommend Airalo’s Asia Regional plan. Here’s my decision guide:
| Trip Duration | Countries | Recommended Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Under 7 days | 1 country | Country-specific 3GB |
| 1-2 weeks | 1-2 countries | Asia Regional 5-10GB |
| 3-6 weeks | 3+ countries | Asia Regional 10-20GB |
| 2+ months | Multi-country | Asia Regional 20GB + renewal |
Step 4: Purchase Your Plan
- Download the Airalo app (iOS or Android)
- Create an account
- Search for your destination or “Asia”
- Select your preferred plan
- Pay via card or PayPal
- Your eSIM details appear instantly
Step 5: Install the eSIM at Home
Do this on your home WiFi — not airport WiFi (which can be unreliable).
iPhone:
- Tap “Direct Install” in the Airalo app OR
- Settings > Mobile Data > Add eSIM > Use QR Code
Android:
- Settings > SIM card manager > Add eSIM
- Scan the QR code from the Airalo app
Note: You need the QR code displayed on a different device or screen. Screenshot it and display it on another screen, or print it.

Step 6: Configure Your Lines
After installing:
- Name your lines (e.g., “UK – EE” and “Airalo Asia”)
- Set your home SIM as default for calls and SMS
- Set Airalo as default for mobile data
- Enable Data Roaming on the Airalo line — this is essential
Step 7: Test Before You Fly
Here’s a quick test: momentarily disable your home SIM in Settings, and try loading a webpage using only the Airalo eSIM. If it works, everything is set up correctly.
Don’t worry — your plan data won’t actually start counting until you use it in the destination country (for most plans). The test just confirms the installation is correct.
Step 8: Travel!
On your flight, put your phone in Airplane Mode as normal. When you land:
- Disable Airplane Mode
- Make sure the Airalo eSIM is selected for data
- You should see your destination network appear within 60 seconds

Common Pre-Departure Mistakes
- Not enabling Data Roaming — most common issue
- Wrong SIM selected for data — check Settings after landing
- Installing on wrong device — eSIM is tied to the device it’s installed on
- QR code scanned twice — each Airalo QR works once only
