## How to Switch Between eSIM Plans While Traveling Southeast Asia

For a long Southeast Asia trip, you might end up with multiple eSIM plans — a Thailand plan, a Vietnam plan, or an Asia Regional covering all of them. Managing these while crossing borders is simpler than it sounds, but there are a few things worth knowing.

### The Simplest Approach: Use a Regional Plan

Honestly? The easiest way to avoid all plan-switching complexity is to use **Airalo’s Asia Regional plan.** It covers Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, and more — all on one plan. No switching. Ever.

This is what I do for most Southeast Asia trips. Buy it, install it, forget about it.

### When You Might Need to Switch Plans

You might have multiple plans if:
– You started with a Thailand-only plan and extended your trip
– You want to combine a short-validity plan with a long one
– You got a better deal on a country-specific plan
– Your regional plan ran out and you topped up with a country plan

### How to Switch eSIM Plans

**On iPhone:**
1. Go to **Settings > Mobile Data**
2. You’ll see all your installed eSIM plans listed
3. Tap on the plan you want to activate
4. Tap **”Turn On This Line”**
5. Your previous plan deactivates automatically

**On Samsung Galaxy:**
1. **Settings > Connections > SIM card manager**
2. Tap the toggle next to the plan you want to activate
3. Tap the toggle next to the plan you want to deactivate

**On Google Pixel:**
1. **Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs**
2. Tap on the plan you want to make active
3. Toggle “Use SIM” on/off

### The Data Roaming Check

Every time you switch to a different eSIM plan, verify:
1. The correct eSIM is selected for mobile data
2. **Data Roaming is enabled** for that eSIM

Data Roaming being off is the single most common reason eSIMs stop working after a plan switch.

### Border Crossing Tips

**Before crossing the border:**
1. Note the data remaining on your current plan
2. Check if your regional plan covers the next country (it likely does)
3. If switching to a country plan, install it before you lose internet access

**At the border:**
1. Airplane Mode on
2. Airplane Mode off
3. Your phone searches for available networks
4. Check your Settings — make sure the right plan is active

### Important: Don’t Delete eSIM Profiles

I cannot stress this enough. Once an Airalo eSIM is deleted from your device, you cannot reinstall it — the QR code is already used. **Only deactivate profiles**, never delete them, unless the plan has genuinely expired and you need to free up slots.

### What Happens to Unused Data When You Switch Plans?

If you switch from Plan A to Plan B while Plan A still has data remaining:
– Plan A’s data is paused, not lost
– When you switch back to Plan A, the remaining data is still there
– Data expires at Plan A’s end date, not based on usage

This is actually a great feature — you can switch back to an earlier plan if needed.
