## How to Save Money on Data Plans While Traveling in Asia

I run a fairly tight budget when I travel, and mobile data is one of those costs I’ve learned to optimise carefully. You don’t need a $45/month unlimited plan to stay connected in Southeast Asia. With a bit of strategy, you can keep data costs to $15-20 per month while staying well-connected.
Here are my actual tactics.

### Tactic #1: Use a Regional Plan for Multi-Country Trips
Buying country-by-country SIMs across a 5-country trip easily costs $40-60+. An Airalo Asia Regional 10GB plan covers all five countries for $17. Simple maths.
### Tactic #2: Use the Right Data Size
Most travellers overbuy data out of anxiety. Track your actual usage for one month at home — most people use 3-5GB/month with normal habits. In Southeast Asia with café WiFi supplementing, 5GB often lasts a month.
**Calculate before buying:**
– How many days?
– WiFi availability (heavy: hotel + café = low mobile use / light: rural travel = high mobile use)
– Video calls? (High data) or just messaging and maps? (Low data)
### Tactic #3: Use Offline Maps
Google Maps in offline mode uses zero data. Before arriving anywhere new:
1. Open Google Maps
2. Search for the city
3. Download > Confirm
I download maps for every city I’ll visit. Navigation becomes completely free.
### Tactic #4: Download Before You Go
Podcasts, Netflix shows, Spotify playlists — download them on hotel WiFi. Your eSIM stays free for maps and messaging only.
### Tactic #5: Use WiFi Calling
For calls back home, don’t use cellular minutes. Use:
– **WhatsApp** video/voice calls (minimal data, excellent quality)
– **Google Meet** / **Zoom** (higher data, use on WiFi)
– iPhone **WiFi Calling** (calls routed over WiFi using your UK number)
### Tactic #6: Co-working WiFi for Heavy Use
If you need to download large files or do video calls, do it at a co-working space. Bangkok’s True Digital Park, Chiang Mai’s Punspace, Bali’s Dojo all offer day passes for $5-10, and their WiFi is significantly better than your eSIM.

### Tactic #7: Airalo Referrals = Free Data
Airalo’s referral programme gives you $3 Airmoney credit per referral. Recommend it to fellow travellers and eventually your plans start becoming partially free. I’ve earned $15-20 in credits just from helping people at hostels set up their eSIMs.
### Tactic #8: Buy in Bulk
Airalo’s larger plans have lower cost-per-GB:
– 3GB: ~$3.00/GB
– 10GB: ~$1.70/GB
– 20GB: ~$1.40/GB
If you’ll need more than 3GB, the 10GB plan is almost always better value.
### My Actual Monthly Data Cost in Southeast Asia: ~$17
Using Airalo Asia Regional 10GB plan, offline maps, café WiFi for calls, and downloaded entertainment — I keep connectivity costs to around $17/month. That’s less than half what many digital nomads pay.
