## Ubigi eSIM Review 2025 — Performance and Value in Asia

Ubigi is a French eSIM provider owned by Transatel (a NTT subsidiary) that’s gained traction as an alternative to Airalo and Holafly. I tested it during a Thailand-Vietnam run in 2025. Here’s my honest review.

### Ubigi — Company Background
**Parent company:** Transatel (subsidiary of NTT, Japan’s largest telecom)
**Founded:** 2019 as consumer brand
**Coverage:** 200+ countries
**Network approach:** Enterprise-grade wholesale roaming deals via NTT parent company
**Headquarters:** Paris, France
The NTT backing means Ubigi has enterprise-level roaming agreements — potentially better wholesale rates that could translate to competitive pricing.
### Ubigi Pricing — Asia Plans
| Plan | Data | Duration | Price |
|—|—|—|—|
| Thailand | 3 GB | 30 days | ~$12 |
| Thailand | 10 GB | 30 days | ~$22 |
| Asia (20+ countries) | 5 GB | 30 days | ~$20 |
| Asia | 10 GB | 30 days | ~$32 |
**Versus Airalo:**
– Airalo Thailand 10GB: ~$17
– Airalo Asia Regional 10GB: ~$17
Ubigi’s Asia Regional plan is noticeably more expensive than Airalo for equivalent coverage.
### Performance Testing — Thailand and Vietnam
**Bangkok:**
| Test | Ubigi | Airalo |
|—|—|—|
| Download (Silom) | 44 Mbps | 52 Mbps |
| Upload | 21 Mbps | 28 Mbps |
| Latency | 22ms | 18ms |
**Ho Chi Minh City:**
| Test | Ubigi | Airalo |
|—|—|—|
| Download | 41 Mbps | 48 Mbps |
| Upload | 19 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
Ubigi performs well but slightly trails Airalo in both countries. Still entirely adequate for any travel use.
### Ubigi App Experience
The Ubigi app is functional but less intuitive than Airalo. Setup process works but the interface feels more utilitarian. Data usage tracking is clear. Plan purchasing and renewal process works smoothly.
Notable: Ubigi allows data gifting between users — an unusual feature that could be useful for travel groups.
### Ubigi Strengths
– Enterprise-grade roaming via NTT parent company
– Data gifting between users (unique feature)
– Available on eSIM-compatible devices without physical SIM dependency
– Car connectivity plans available (tablet/router focus)
### Ubigi Weaknesses
– More expensive than Airalo for comparable Asia coverage
– App less polished than Airalo
– Brand recognition lower — fewer online reviews and travel community mentions
– Customer support slower than Airalo

### When to Choose Ubigi
– If you’re travelling to a destination where Airalo has limited coverage but Ubigi’s NTT network has better penetration
– For device connectivity beyond phones (some routers and tablets connect via Ubigi)
– For data gifting in a travel group on the same platform
### My Verdict
Ubigi is a solid eSIM provider backed by serious telecom infrastructure. But for Southeast Asia specifically, Airalo’s better pricing, larger travel community, and more polished app experience make it the smarter default choice. Ubigi’s NTT advantage doesn’t translate to a clear win in Thailand or Vietnam where Airalo’s AIS/Viettel partnerships are already strong.
